Blogging 101

1/27/2015 04:49:00 PM

Hey beauties,

So you've read my post on What They DON'T Tell You About Blogging and you've decided that you still would love to start a blog; I'm proud of you!! Now, I'll be giving you all the tips I have learned throughout my 6 months of blogging and hopefully you'll learn a few things on how to start your own blog!

One of the biggest factors that grow your viewership and blog in general is consistency. Being consistent with your post will not only help your blog grow but will also help motivate you because you have a deadline and will make it sort of like a habit in which you always will have a post ready for that specific day of the week. One of the biggest things that hurt my log was that I stopped blogging for over a month due to exams and school work and it decreased my viewership extremely. I had to build up my views all over again and delayed the growing process of my blog.

Which brings me to my next point, which is always be prepared. One of my biggest struggles is having multiple posts ready just in case I can't write that day or the night before. Now that I'm on holiday, I'm able to type up the post on the same day or the day before without the fear of university work getting in the way. But, before I was on holiday and my blogging schedule was 3 posts a week, I would type up the posts in the weekend and schedule them to automatically post throughout the week. Now, if that seems like to much for you, figure out a schedule that will work for YOU. Make your blog as flexible as you want it, to fit your needs and your capabilities so that you won't struggle with finding time to post.

One thing I've learned that plays a pivotal role in your blog growth and specifically your readership is having to be social. As I mentioned in my previous post, if know one knows about your blog, no one will read it, its as simple as that! Don't think that people will read your blog and then you'll gain followers on social media because if people don't know you even have a blog, how will they follow you on social media? You need to first interact with other bloggers and potential readers and grow your connections with other bloggers in order to gain a viewership. First off, decide if you will have separate accounts for your blog and your personal life or if you'll keep using your personal accounts. Pros of using your private accounts: you already will have a fairly large following, you won't have to manage two separate accounts, and its more convenient. Cons: might feel restricted and not able to post as much as you'd like about your blog, will not be able to keep your private life separate from your blog, and will have to allow anyone to see your page. Personally, I feel like keeping two separate accounts is best. I feel like I have more freedom and its easier for people to find me when my social media handles are all @lineupthemakeup.

Something you need to have when your blogging is creativity. You have to be creative nowadays, as new blogs are popping up everyday, you have to have catchy and unique posts! If your posts are generic and don't stand out, people won't choose to read your blog instead of any other blog. Try to create posts that will inspire others (try me, two people today alone posted posts inspired by one of my posts and its one of the best feelings) and will let your personality show through. If try to make your posts too generic just to be relatable, it won't show who you are and you'll get bored of writing your posts too quickly.

If you want people to stay on your blog, make your blog attractive. Now, this doesn't mean you need all the colors in the rainbow and flashing images everywhere; a simple, clean looking blog can be appealing too! What I mean by making your blog attractive is that it should keep the reader interested. Whether you choose to go for a colorful look or a clean and simple looking blog, it should look professionally done and not draw too much attention from the content. You need to remember that your blog isn't homework or a school assignment that's due tomorrow. Don't pressure yourself to have a post up just to maintain your schedule. Yes, push yourself to keep your blog consistent but don't pressure yourself to the point where you feel pressured to have a post up. If you can't do it, don't; it's as simple as that.

And the most important thing you need to remember: You're doing this for yourself. It's not a chore. First and foremost, your blog should be a passion and not a chore; you should feel happy when you're blogging (example: I'm currently typing this at 1:57 AM whilst blasting music and it's probably one of the things I'm happiest things to do!). If it starts feeling like a chore, take a break or decrease the amount of posts you post in a week. And I know, you're probably tempted to only post about topics that get the most views (my posts on my favorites get almost 4x the amount of views my normal posts get) but that will push you to post about topics you don't always want to post about and you won't be 100% happy with your content. Yes, it would be frustrating to get a third of the views you got on your last post but at least you'll be much happier with the content you're putting forward.

I hope this post was helpful to all of you upcoming bloggers and current bloggers want a few helpful tips? Bloggers everywhere, what are some tips and tricks of the trade you have learned? Leave them in the comments!

  1. I agree with all your points. Being creative is quite a challenge for me, especially when taking photographs that fit in with the theme of my post that day. I'm also my own worst critic, I really have to ease up on that front, otherwise it will zap all of my passion for blogging out of me.

  2. I loveeee this post! Every single point is perfect but my favorite is "be prepared". I've run into a few situations where I couldn't post and the days I wasn't prepared, I had to miss that day but the days I had post waiting in line I felt like a boss lol 😂 but seriously, it's always a good idea to schedule posts in advance. This is so well written. Love it girl, keep up the good work ! I'm glad you're back 😊
